Pathogens and the environment: interdisciplinary research at the service of human health

This department’s uniqueness lies in the fact that is made up of some 30 staff members from CNRS, IRD, Hospital and University Hospital staff. We work on several models (Bacteria, Parasites, and Fungi) of known human pathogens and are developing a research continuum using multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches that can be descriptive (identification and description), mechanistic (understanding and explanation), interventional, and related to public health. Our research contributes to producing expertise and innovation (in terms of the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases in developing countries, diagnostic tools, biomarkers, therapeutic targets and candidate molecules, methodological tools, software).

Primary objectives:

To characterise the genetic, adaptive, epidemiological, and socio-environmental factors and mechanisms that promote the emergence and transmission of pathogens, in order to contribute to the development of new strategies to combat them.

Specific objectives:

  • To describe and explain the processes behind the emergence and transmission of human pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, with a particular focus on southern countries
  • To characterise and understand the fundamental biological processes of trypanosomatids
  • To study the evolutionary molecular mechanisms that underlie the adaptation of microorganisms, such as antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and pathogen-pathogen or host-pathogen interactions
  • To define the genetic entities making a species and their circulation over a long period
  • To evaluate interspecies gene flows and post-hybridisation genomic evolution
  • Translational research
    • Development of diagnostic and molecular identification methods, based on kit assessments, within the framework of the Toxoplasmosis and Leishmania National
    • Development of innovative tools to help analyse data and improve human health
